A Journey Through the Vines and Aromas of Cariñena
The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Cariñena is located in the province of Zaragoza and is one of Spain’s oldest wine regions, established in 1932.
Comprising 16 municipalities, south of the city of Zaragoza, it is the largest PDO in Aragón, flanked by the Sierra de Algairén.
Known for its indigenous grape varieties, it is particularly famous for the Cariñena grape, which gives its name to both the town—founded by the Romans as Carae—and the PDO. This variety produces red wines with great body, deep color, and strong character.
The region enjoys a continental climate, influenced by Mediterranean weather patterns, the Cierzo wind, and a variety of rocky soils, all of which contribute to producing high-quality wines across different styles.
In addition to red wines, PDO Cariñena also produces whites, rosés, fortified wines, and sparkling wines under the DO Cava, which have gained prestige in national and international markets.
PDO Cariñena blends the tradition and expertise of its winemakers with the latest technologies in viticulture and winemaking, adapting to new consumers and attracting more wine lovers from around the world.
