Wine and Mudéjar in Calatayud
The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Calatayud covers a group of wineries and vineyards distributed across 51 municipalities in the province of Zaragoza.
This area is framed by mountain formations at altitudes between 650 and 1,100 meters, at the foothills of Moncayo and the Sierra de Armantes within the Iberian System, where a network of rivers flows, formed by tributaries of the Ebro River, such as the Jiloca and the Jalón.
This PDO stands out particularly for its high-quality wines and its Garnacha Tinta vineyards, cultivated as bush vines that thrive in mountainous terrain with slate soils and an extreme continental climate, resulting in a later harvest compared to other regions.
Calatayud wines are known for their intense aromas and fruity flavors of strawberries and raspberries, as well as their notable mineral subtlety.
The winemaking tradition of the area dates back centuries, beginning with the Celtiberians, with historical influences that have enriched its viticultural heritage to this day, as showcased in the Wine Museum of the Monasterio de Piedra (Nuévalos).
In recent years, PDO Calatayud wines have gained recognition in both national and international markets, receiving numerous awards and medals.
